Today, the 18th, is celebrated the anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons: 30 years ago the visionay Gary Gygax created a system that allows us to enter a world of fantasy and to interact with it. Although an avid fantasy reader, my discovery of the game came late in my life: first by the absence of the market in Portugal (I can still remember the trouble of finding Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles, R. A. Salvatore's Icewind Dale Trilogy... not to mention the awful Tolkien editions that were available!) and then by the lack of friends to do it, but I can still remeber the cold pizza and flat coke fueled all-nighters, lived in some fantastic world, searching for some magic item or even trying to save the multiverse...

Nowadays there's a whole range of fantasy-related games, fantasy books flood the market (especially after Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings) but Dungeons & Dragons still is a reference. My sister is now pregnant and I can hardly wait to introduce my nephew to Dungeons & Dragons! Thanks Gygax!

Hoje, dia 18, comemora-se o aniversário do jogo Dungeons & Dragons: foi há 30 anos que o visionário Gary Gygax imaginou um sistema que nos permite entrar num mundo de fantasia e interagir com ele. Apesar de um ávido leitor de fantasia, descobri o jogo um bocado tarde: primeiro pela ausência de um mercado em Portugal (ainda me lembro a dificuldade que tive em achar a série do Discworld do Terry Pratchett, as crónicas de Dragonlance por Weis e Hickman, a Trilogia Icewind Dale de R. A. Salvatore... para não falar das miseráveis edições de Tolkien que havia!) e depois por falta de companheiros para o fazer, mas ainda me lembro bem das noitadas alimentadas a pizza fria e coca-cola sem gás, vividas num qualquer mundo fantástico, à procura de um qualquer item mágico ou mesmo a tentar salvar o multiverso...

Agora há uma parafernália de jogos ligados à fantasia, os livros de fantasia inundam o mercado (especialmente depois d'O Senhor dos Anéis de Peter Jackson) mas o Dungeons & Dragons continua uma referência. A minha irmã está grávida e eu mal posso esperar para introduzir o meu sobrinho o Dungeons & Dragons! Obrigado Gygax!
