Ernesto Che Guevara was undoubtebly an importat reference in the ideological panorama, but what does “Che” mean nowadays? Walter Salles, with writer Jose Rivera’s help, explores just that in this movie. More than a story of two young men on a trip through South America, Salles draws a socio-political map of the region and tries to find in that register the development of a future “Che”, still in a seminal state, in Ernesto’s character. This search becomes even more obvious if we take in account the economical situation of the region: Salles seems to want to inspire new “Che”s without using his best-known image, that has reached the state of a simulacrum (even Andy Warhol used it in one of his paintings), but the one of a young man with needs similar to every young man today and by revealing the human potential of the region that becomes evident to both characters though their journey. With a photography of an extreme beauty and with the excelent acting of Gael Garcia Bernal and Rodrigo de la Serna, this is without a doubt a must-see movie.

Ernesto Che Guevara foi, sem dúvida, uma referência importante no panorama ideológico, mas o que significa actualmente o “Che”? Walter Salles, com a ajuda do escritor Jose Rivera, explora exactamente isso neste filme. Mais do que uma história de dois jovens que embarcam numa viagem através da América do Sul, Salles elabora o mapa sócio-político da região e procura nesse registo o desenvolvimento de um futuro “Che”, ainda em estado seminal, dentro da personagem de Ernesto. Esta procura torna-se ainda mais óbvia se tivermos em conta a situação económica na zona: Salles parece tentar inspirar novos “Che”s sem usar a imagem mais conhecida, que atingiu já um status de simulacro (até Andy Warhol a usou num dos seus quadros), mas a de um jovem com vontades semelhantes a todos os jovens actuais e mostrando todo o potencial humano da região que se vai revelando aos dois personagens na sua viagem. Com uma fotografia de um beleza extrema e com as actuações excelentes de Gael Garcia Bernal e de Rodrigo de la Serna, este é sem dúvida um filme a não perder.
